PALACE OF THE PEOPLE conciliation hall

Once a hall for assemblies of “Palatium Comunis”, it was converted into a theatre in 1755 (Teatro del Leone) and became both archives and a warehouse in 1840. In 1924 Podesta  Arnaldo Fortini ordered the restoration of the hall into a neo-medieval style. The project was done by Architect Ruggero Antonelli (Perugia 1888-1974). On October 4th 1926, the memorable meeting between Minister Pietro Fedele and Cardinal Raffaele Merry del Val took place here, on the occasion of the celebration for the seven hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Francis. The name Sala della Conciliazione (Conciliation Hall) was given after the signing of Lateran Pacts between the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See (February 11th 1929). The walls of the Sala della Conciliazione are decorated with paintings by Enzo Morelli (Bagnavacallo 1896; Bogliaco del Garda 1976). Morelli was given the assignment by Podesta Arnaldo Fortini in August 1926 and he completed his work on June 22nd 1931. The triptych on the back wall is inspired by the Canticle of Creatures: at the centre is Saint Francis showing the stigmata; on the left there is Friar Elia and Bishop Rufino in front of the Porziuncola and the city of Assisi; on the right there is Saint Clare and three Poor Clares in front of the Monastery of San Damiano. The paintings were seriously damaged by the earthquake of September 26th 1997. The entrance wall is decorated with five frames, with couples dressed in medieval costumes.
