TOWER OF THE PEOPLE

The very tall tower (47 m), the Torre del Popolo (Tower of the People), is located next to the Temple of Minerva. According to what we know about Assisi in 1267, the tower was built as the judiciary for of the “Captain of the People.” The building was partially completed in 1274, based on a legible date on a bell, and was home to the Captain’s family during the year of 1279. An inscription at the base of the tower reveals that the construction was completed in 1305, during the time of the Captain Cabrino da Parma. In 1926, to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death, the tower was crowned with Gheberllini crenellation and a bell of praise was installed as an offering to St. Francis on behalf of the Italian people
